Phil Streather

When I started sound recording I was using a NAGRA IV-S and images were gathered on film.

My most recent work was on a Sound Devices 633 mixer/recorder, with Tentacle TC, recording ISOs and sound hopped to a RED Helium.

Different equipment – same challenges. Namely, to liaise with the director and DoP and record the best sound possible to suit the story, in any given situation.

I love sound recording in a tight team of director and DoP (sometimes the same person). I have recorded sensitive films (Everyman, Death’s Door – about families dealing with death), films with Hollywood stars (In the Wild – Pandas with Debra Winger) and multi award winning films (The Ark by Molly Dineen – BAFTA for Best Series).

The earliest was back in the early 90s, and the latest June 2021 for Frozen Planet II in the Arctic. There was a gap for producing IMAX, theatrical and TV documentaries and making my own films as a shooter/editor. But, it’s good to be back in the saddle of sound.

Of my most recent work for Frozen Planet II Director and DoP said the following:

Director – Sacha Thorpe:

“Thanks so much for everything on the shoot. I can’t believe it’s been 20+ years since you’ve done sound. Slotted straight back in there like a seasoned pro!”

DoP – Ben Sadd:

“We had an enjoyable and successful trip with Phil to the Arctic. His skill and experience in sound recording was a great asset on the shoot, it allowed us to really focus on the images. He was also a great chap to have around and I wouldn’t hesitate to work with him in the future.”

I look forward to discussing your next project.
