Richard Maxwell


Between 1991 and 1994, Richard Maxwell (A.K.A. Max) studied film and documentary production in Wales, finishing with a postgraduate diploma with distinction from the Center for Journalism Studies, University College of Wales, Cardiff. He won an RTS award for his final documentary project ‘Slapps‘ which he shot and edited. Further awards followed including a Grammy nomination for Coldplay Tour Diary DVD which he shot and in 2006 an RTS Craft Award for Camerawork/Lighting Camerawork on Seaside Rescue series three.

After leaving film school Max worked as a freelance sound recordist on drama and documentaries, working out of Films@59 in Bristol. Switching to self-shooting Producer/Director in 2001 Max has been working on long-term observational documentary projects and format shows since then. He has filmed all over the world from the heat of Hawaiian volcanoes and most of Southern and Western Africa to the cold of Alpine ski resorts and the arctic circle.

Max has the ability to relate to and get the best from contributors, presenters and crew. He has an extensive technical knowledge of camera, sound and editing and has worked in all areas of production. He has a proven track record of working with presenters, actors on location and managing production teams in the field. He has worked for all of the major broadcasters and most of the large independent production companies.

Training has included, lighting, camera rigging for car, motorbike, helicopters, and lifeboats, further OTJ training on Sony XDCam HD, 450,570 & 790 camcorders and Panasonic HD varicam. Max has developed and run camera, sound training and editing courses for the BBC HNU, Tigress, Diverse Bristol and the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. He has attended BBC courses on ‘Dealing with Aggression’,  ‘Handling Long Term Documentary Contributors’ and is the holder of a BBC Health and Safety passport (working with lights and cameras). He is a trained first aider and passed the personal sea survival course.

As well as freelancing as a camera/director & sound recordist Max is Head of TV Production at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

Max holds full clean car and motorbike licenses.
